KOLLAM POORAM
This mega event marks the end of a ten-day festival of Kollam Ashramam Sree Krishna Swamy Temple. It is held every year on the Vishu eve at Kollam Ashramam Ground where thousands of enthusiasts gather to witness this colourful festivity.
Every year in April, the Sreekrishna Swamy Temple at Ashramam in Kollam surges to life with its annual pageantry of elephant festival, parading over 40 elephants in the vast ground there. The tuskers in full splendor decorated with caparison and colourful umbrellas offer a splendid spectacle to the thousands of people assembling for the fest. All roads will literally lead to Ashramam on the day and the place turn to a large pool of fun and festivity. It has now assumed the status of a national festival attracting tourists in large numbers from different destinations. Performed along the lines of the famous Thrissur Pooram, Kollam Elephant Pageantry has also been a major event with ‘Kudamattam’ (exchange of colourful umbrellas) involving 15 elephants each on either side representing Thamarakulam Sri Mahaganapathy Temple and Puthiyakavu Bhagavathy Temple respectively. Fervent drum beats will render the atmosphere with cascading rhythm and huge fireworks at night will illuminate the sky.
