OACHIRA TEMPLE

Oachira is a very famous place on the border of Kollam and Alappuzha districts on the National Highway 47 and is well-known for its temple dedicated to Parabrahma or Universal Consciousness. A sprawling thirty six acre of land forms the temple premises where the ritualistic annual ‘Oachirakkali’ takes place. Another popular festival associated with the temple is ‘Panthrandu Vilakku’ otherwise called ‘Twelve Lamps’ lasting twelve days. ‘Oachirakkali’ involves men dressed up as warriors and standing knee-deep in water enacting mock wars among themselves. Two days of this ritual is followed by a few days of brisk trade in cattle and agricultural produce at the Ochira Temple Grounds.
