PUTHENKULAM ELEPHANT VILLAGE

Puthenkulam is a tiny village in Kollam about 25 kms away from the district centre but now it is a well-known centre for captive elephants in Kerala. The place attracts thousands of tourists and travellers from within Kerala and elsewhere. It is a pleasure to watch newly caught elephant calves in their playful and innocently disobedient mood and huge tuskers with their majestic stature and pose obediently acting to expert trainers. Tourists can take elephant rides, watch elephants bathe and even feed them with the help of mahouts.

A sprawling 3.5 acre of land accommodates the captive elephants. Tourists can also get to see typical elephant ornaments such as caparisons, colourful umbrellas, alavattom, venchamaram and other paraphernalia usually associated with temple festivals in which elephants are almost an indispensable part in Kerala.
