SHEIK MASJID MOSQUE, KARUNAGAPPALLY
This is a very popular mosque in Karunagappally in Kollam district. It is otherwise known as the Taj Mahal of Kerala as it resembles the original Taj Mahal in Agra, in shape and style. It is so large that about 3000 devotees can perform Namaz here at one go. The story of the mosque dates back to some 400 years. Karunagappally at that time was the abode of black snakes. Nobody dared to go to the place. A Siddha from Oachira once reached here with the blessings from a Malabari priest. He visited the then King and requested for some land. The King wholeheartedly gave land to Siddha. He performed some special tricks and conquered the black snake and sent it back to the forest. Later it was never seen anymore by anyone. The King gave Siddha permission to build a mosque at the place. Thus was built this mosque at Karunagappaly four decades back.
