Kollam or Quilon formerly Desinganadu, is an old seaport and city on the western sea coast of Kerala. The city is also fondled by the Lake Ashtamudi. Kollam has had a strong commercial reputation since the days of the Phoenicians and Romans. The name Kollam is believed to have been derived from a Sanskrit word which means pepper. During ancient times, Kollam was world-famous for its trade culture especially for the availability and export of fine quality pepper and other various spices Kollam has also played a vital role in the business, economic, cultural and religious realms. Kollam is situated in the southwest corner of Kerala, India. The district is encircled by Alappuzha in the north Pathanamthitta in the northeast Thiruvananthapuram in the south, Tirunelveli Tamil Nadu) in the east and the Arabian Sea in the west Malayalam calendar (The Kollavarsham) is also known so with the name of the city Kollam In 1809 Velu Thampi the Dalawa of erstwhile Travancore, addressed a crowd at Kundara, in Kollam The strongly-worded proclamation known as the Kundara Proclamation ignited the minds of the crowd and encouraged the Travancore, regular troops, to attack the British force stationed in Kollam

Kollam has a large railway station and its platform is one of the longest in the country. It is a major junction and therefore all trains passing through Kollam stop at this station Kollam is the center of the country’s cashew trading and processing industry. Kollam is rich with its beauty of the magnificent backwaters and two rivers – Kallada and Ithikkara – flowing through the district. The Sasthamkotta Lake, the only freshwater lake in the state, is in Kollam Two other major lakes are the Astamudi Kayal and the Paravoor Kayal Edava and Nadayara Kayal also lie partly in this district. The district as any other place in Kerala has a pleasant climate. Though relatively hot in summer, it is mild and cool at other times with enough rain during monsoon
